RUNAWAY NIGHTMARE HAS ARRIVED AGAIN – Runaway Nightmare (‘The life’s work of a dedicated lunatic’) is now an officially recognized cult film – included in Wikipedia’s “List of Cult Films,” six months after acknowledging/accepting the movie as an official article. While I am surpassingly proud of RN’s recognition (it cost me nothing while I made it up as I went along), I still hope this is not the film I am remembered for. One of only the best (well, recognized) 1,869 cult films ever made.

21 YEARS AGO TODAY – Michael Cartel was a Los Angeles Unified School District teacher (certified substitute elementary and L.A. Teaching Fellows high school teacher). Here at Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley instructing Special Education students.
As a teacher I always wore a suit and tie, but this was taken on a ‘casual wear Friday’.

Most recently, I saw Runaway Nightmare where we did the theatrical world premiere (at the Ritz Drafthouse in Austin, Texas) and (Drafthouse programmer) Joe (Ziemba) brought the director Mike Cartel to 
attend the screening. That was a really nice screening because I don’t know if you’ve seen the film, but it’s one of the more challenging films we’ve put out both in terms of structure and interpretation. I was really nervous before the screening in how the audience would react. Would they laugh when they are supposed to laugh, not when they weren’t supposed to laugh? Or would they be bored or disinterested? I was very pleased with the reactions in terms of the overall audience at the Alamo Ritz, I was definitely impressed with, more than anything, the sophistication of the audience.”

Seeska Vandenberg Lobato 1958 – 2014 
I deeply regret to inform you that Seeska (Vandenberg) Lobato passed away on November 10, of natural causes. Ms. Lobato was the lead actress in Runaway Nightmare. She leaves behind a husband (Luis Lobato) and two children. Mari and I were personal friends of Seeska and remain devastated from the news of her death. I had joined Seeska with her husband, my father and members of the crew in a surprise reunion of RN at the Beverly Cinema on July 22, truthfully telling her how young and beautiful she looked. She was also born with a natural charm, grace and humor. Although a fine actress and model, our Seeska chose a career in real estate with great success.

J. (John) Christopher Senter 1948 – 2014
Chris left us five days after celebrating his 66th birthday. Enormously talented, it seemed there was nothing Chris couldn’t accomplish, intellectually, artistically, physically. He worked tirelessly for me in Runaway Nightmare as art director, actor, grip or anything else that needed done. When I was concerned about shooting a motorcycle stunt in RN myself, Chris volunteered but injured his leg in the process (photo five clicks above). Chris kept everyone in better moods between takes when we worked those weekends without breaks. Although Mari and I hadn’t seen Chris much after filming, we were deeply saddened to learn (over two years after his death) that he had passed away from us.

Runaway Nightmare made its Los Angeles theatrical premiere at the New Beverly Cinema on Tuesday. Brian J. Quinn (the Grindhouse Film Festival) introduced Mike Cartel who introduced the movie, then took thoughtful questions from the audience at the finish. Mr. Quinn along with Joe Rubin (Vinegar Syndrome) kept the conversation and program moving smoothly. Seeska (Vandenberg) Lobato, who is the female lead was asked to appear on stage where she addressed the receptive crowd. And, a SURPRISE reunion that included (along with Seeska); Mr. Luis Lobato (Seeska‘s longtime husband!); Enzo Giobbe (the first Director of Photography on RN who did the striking interiors); Vince Giobbe (Enzo‘s son, who had worked with some of the movie at age 13); Jerry Wolfe (the Sound Department guy, the sometimes Cameraman, and impetus for RN); Barbara Wolfe (the overwhelmed make-up person who later worked on the Valley Vantage with Mike and Mari (Cartel) years later!) and Eldon W. Short (the long-suffering Executive Producer). Cartel was also honored to sign the DVD/Blu-ray packages that had earlier been raffled off.
